Q: Ty obviously talked in here the other night that you were expecting to watchthe film and see that there were a lot of ways you could push the pace. Certainly seemed like you did that right out of the gate today. Just what did you see in terms of opportunities that were going to be there, and what did you like about how you guys were able to create pace and get started?

Hali: Yeah, I felt like in the fourth quarter last game, we were a little bit more reactive than proactive. They got some guys who can just make some hellacious shots, and KAT and JB did that last game. I felt like those were kind of taking the air out of us, and we were kind of sighing after everyone and walking the ball up. Today, we were just trying to keep focus on, “Who cares?” Let’s get it in and run, go right back at them. They’re going to make shots—let’s just keep going.
So I thought we did a great job of just playing our way the whole game, keepingpace, and just playing Pacer basketball. I thought we responded really well, which we’ve proven we do after tough losses all year, especially in these playoffs. Really proud of our effort as a group.
Now I got to watch this film, see where we can get better. I think there are still ways for us to get better. They made some hellacious shots again today—OG made a big sidestep on that left wing, Mikal made some big shots. When you play these guys, the game ain’t over till it hits zero. So, I thought we did a great job staying with it, and we’ll watch film, see where we can improve, and get ready for Game 5.

Q: Rick was just saying he doesn’t want to talk too much about individual statistics, but 32-15-12, four steals, and zero turnovers—what makes you proud of just the completeness of that game? What stood out to you about how you were ableto put it all together on both ends?

Hali: Yeah, I was just trying to be aggressive, man. Just trying to play my best. I felt like I let the team down in Game 3. Felt like I could’ve been so muchbetter. So, I felt like I responded the right way today—just trying to be aggressive, take what the defense gives me. Felt like I was a little jittery, playing too fast.So, just trying to calm myself down, especially in the halfcourt and isolations—just settle down. And then just trying to find guys and play the right way.

I got so many guys who just crash the glass like crazy. I’m just trying to come in and clean it up, and I thought I did a decent job at that.
Still a lot of ways for me to get better and for us to get better as a group. None of that’s possible without full team effort.

Q: Ask about one guy—Ben Mathurin. He comes up with 20, making a lot of shots it seemed like you wanted him to make, making the passes you want him to make. What did you like about his approach—how he got past a couple tough games and basically gave you the offensive performance you wanted from him?

Hali: Yeah, I think he just settled in. Obviously, he probably hasn’t played the way he wants to this series. We knew it would just take him seeing one go in.He made that mid-range jumper as soon as he got in the game for me in the firstquarter. Then had a kill cut, made a reverse layup. Sometimes you just have to see the ball go in.
Obviously, he’s a guy we really missed last year in the playoffs—that spark off the bench. And a guy like that comes in, gets 11 free throws, really aggressive for us in his minutes, just playing to the best of his ability.
Coming in today, we didn’t know what was going to be needed from him with Aaron’s status. I thought he did a great job responding, played a great overall game. Yeah, really proud of him tonight. We just got to keep it going.

Q: If you remove the numbers from it, where does that game feel among the best you’ve ever played, and what did it mean to do that with your dad back in the building?

Hali: I’ll look at that later and reflect on it at a different time. For me, it’s just about winning. I want to prove I can respond when my back’s against the wall—when our team’s back is against the wall.
This is a big win for us. If we go back down there 2-2, it’s probably a littledifferent momentum-wise. I felt like we responded the right way. I’m really proud of our effort as a group, just trying to play the right way. I felt like we did that for 48 minutes, and that’s why we came away with the win.
You can feel good about it for the night, but then you’ve got to be ready for Game 5. Their backs are against the wall—they’re going to play as desperate asthey can, as they should. They’re going to come out and throw punches, and we just have to be able to respond. So, really proud of our effort. We’ve got to be ready.

After my third year and getting the big contract, stepping into a new role, forme it was about: how can I impact winning? I’m trying to do that to the best of my ability.
We’re building something special here. We’re having a lot of fun with what we’re doing. I feel like I’m at the forefront of that—along with a lot of these guys. I’m just trying to play the right way and to the best of my ability. That’s what it’s about.
I feel like I did a good job today, but I also feel like there are so many different opportunities for me to get better—and for us as a group. So, we’ll takewhat we can from this game and be ready for Game 5.

Q: I know you said to TNT that having your dad back in the building had something to do with the big game tonight, but you guys blew through Cleveland and yo’re having a great series here. What went on with him—was it tough for you? Were there emotions about having him back here?

There was a lot of commentary around him, especially right after, and some of it was warranted, some of it went too far. But that’s just sports. That’s just talking heads—what can you really do?
I just wanted to put on a good performance. I wanted to win. My dad being here is special, but growing up, my dad was reffing a lot on weekends, so he didn’t get to come to many games. So when he did, I wanted to play well.
With him being in the building, of course I wanted to play well. But let’s be real—we’re saying “Free Pop” and “Pop is free,” but he was not in jail. He
was in a beautiful home watching NBA basketball.

When you’re winning, you can get people out the house to come support you. I’s an exciting time to be a Pacer fan and a Pacer alum. We’re just trying to keep playing the right way—for our fans.

Q: You mentioned the Pacer alumni coming to the game. You had a steal in the third quarter and dabbed up George Hill. What does it mean to be that bridge between the old and the new?

Hali: I see G Hill as one of my vets. He was here with me for a little bit and we still talk.

When I got traded to the Pacers—or just as a basketball fan—you think about the guys who came before you. They tried to help put the organization in a betterplace. They founded it, and that’s what I’m trying to do.

You want to seethose guys come back and you know it means a lot that we were able as a group to get DG out of out the house, I got to meet his kids. JO was in the building. Just many guys who came before me.
To put on that performance in front of them is special. When you’re winning, everybody wants to come out and be a part of it. It’s very special, and a lot offun for me.

Q: Go back to the no turnovers. You’ve been a low-turnover player. Rick said you take pride in that. How much pride do you take in that, especially playing atthe pace you do?

Hali: Just trying to make the right play. My game is a little unorthodox. I jump to pass probably more than anybody in the NBA—but I work on that stuff. Tha’s how I’ve always played.

I’d rather do anything on a basketball court than turn the ball over.

We got a big win, but we know there’s more for us to get better at. We’ve gotto be ready for Game 5. It’s going to be high energy, and we’ve got to be ready.
