Derrick Rose.

back and you carried that with you. You’re not only the MVP, Pooh, you’re
the people’s champ.”

As the crowd repeatedly broke onto cheers during the extra long intermission,Rose, wearing a dark pin striped suit over a white crew neck shirt, slipped
off his glasses to wipe away a few tears.

It was an inspiring and emotional night after the Bulls also announced that
Rose’s jersey No. 1 would be raised next season beside those of Michael
Jordan, Scottie Pippen, Bob Love and Jerry Sloan.

“You gave your city hope,” said Noah, who was wearing a mustard colored
bucket hat with a Rose emblazoned gray hoodie. “I saw it yesterday at Simeon
(Career Academy exhibition), how proud they are of you. I salute you Pooh andeverything you stand for. To see you come out of this journey at peace is what I’m most proud of. That’s why they are putting that No. 1 in the rafters. I
love you and it was a pleasure lacing ‘em up with you.”

Rose, who announced his retirement from the NBA after 16 years before this
season at 36 years old, embraced his “brother” and turned to the crowd
filled with Rose and Simeon jerseys to deliver his own message, of pride, to
the kids.

“The beginning of the video I mentioned to PJ, ‘Do you want to be good or
great?’ He don’t know, but that’s my way of tricking him. With me tricking
him I could be very specific and say, ‘Do you want to be good in basketball?
Or do you want to be great in basketball?’ I want to make it broad so when he says great I can hold you accountable for everything you are not being greatat. That’s the thing he (has to) pass on to his siblings and a joke we have
in the house. If we see you lacking on something they say, ‘Dad, you want to
be good or great?’

Chicago for forcing me to be great, putting those expectations on me, my
understanding that I was trying to be great and the environment I was in
forcing me to. So thank you to everybody who watched me ever since I was in
sixth grade, seventh, eighth, the injuries, MVP, playoff wins, playoff losses. That is going to be the old Pooh. This is the new version of me. This is what you see. I am a businessman now.”

It was a curious denouement, in some respects, but not really because that
Pooh, that Derrick we all came to love and celebrate and root for and then
root against and then for again as he traveled around the NBA since leaving
the Bulls more than eight years ago, has moved on, comfortable in his skin, no regrets, no what ifs, no looking back; just forward. Which also was his
message to his kids, to all the kids, that he’s always Chicago and always
represents the soul of the city, that the game was transitory in some respects, but the relationships are real and enduring and that he’s ever thankful for how Chicago and the Bulls and United Center fans helped him grow and mature
and become the man he’s so happy to be.

“Ever since I went through my case,” Rose before the game meeting with
reporters said in referring to the civil assault case in which he was found
not liable. “That’s when everything changed. I told myself I was going to
make a seven-year vow to do certain things and live on my rudiments. It took
me a while to figure out why I was doing it but I’m on Year 11, 12. I
manifested this. So I guess I’m doing something right. For one, finding my
identity. Two, self-knowledge, three, self-revelation. With those three, I was able to ask questions and figure out things that can not only help me, but
the knowledge that can help my family and my friends around me.

“I was in a state of always wanting to be older than what I was because I
knew me being 18, 19, I could make it to the league,” Rose said. “So for the
kids and for everybody that's out there, I was there. I wanted to get there
ASAP. And I had to wait three or four years and it felt like torture in a wayof knowing that you could be the one to change your family's life. I got three older brothers. Why me? I was very impatient at the time. And with me being
impatient, now looking back at it, it was a little bit of a lack of confidence because if I was confident enough, I would have known that I was going to behere anyway. That's (his ACL and other injuries) something I really don't
think about. The last time I had those conversations was years and years ago.With me being obsessed (about basketball), I wouldn't have found out who I was as a person. I was obsessed with the game. Not love. I was obsessed. So if Iwould've won one championship, I would've wanted four. And that would have
pulled me further and further away from finding self knowledge, self
revelation, identity. Everybody's story is different. For some reason, mine
ended up being this way. Coming from Chicago, we roll with the punches.”

It seemed like a fatal gut punch back in 2012 when Rose rolled over with thatACL tear that effectively ended the Bulls championship dreams with that
wonderful team. Derrick came back, and there were more injuries, and he came
back again, and there were some glimpses of hope, but mostly despair and thena bitter departure from the Bulls that left him in tears, condemned and
virtually out of the NBA until his former Bulls coach, Thibodeau, threw him acareer life line and Derrick regained his career, albeit as a reserve, but
still a valuable player. More importantly he married and had kids, and Layla,London and PJ accompanied him onto the court before the ceremonies and pregame to deliver the game ball.

know how difficult that is and I had the good fortune to coach him, so you see in the eyes of the opponent when they had to guard him. You could see the
fear and the respect and his ability to play his best when his best was needed. Big games, playoff games, games that were needed he went to a different
level. He did it against the best. Very authentic, did it his own way;
unrelenting, never gave in. I always say the true measure of a man is how he
handles adversity, and nobody did it better. He never stays down. He always
found a way to rise above. I’m thrilled for him for the career he’s had. I
think he’s a hall of famer. There’s no question in my mind he’s a Hall of
Fame player.

“His greatness as a player was easy to see,” Thibodeau continued. “The
thing that stood out on top of that was his humility and he cared about
everybody. If you talk to any of his teammates they’d tell you the same
thing; everyone loved him. Loved playing with him, loved the way he cared
about everybody; he just cared about winning. If someone else had a great game he was thrilled for them. He was always lifting people up. People don’t
realize how difficult it is to play in your home town and he did so many
things behind the scenes nobody knew about. He contributed a lot to the
community; not just here, everywhere he’s been. And that says a lot about him as a human being. His actions always spoke volumes, the way he treated his
teammates. I can remember when I first got here he didn’t say a whole lot,
but his actions did and then to watch him go through all the things he went
through and to watch how he’s grown as a person. He’d come into a locker
room and always have a book with him, always reading on the plane. Just a very curious person who has really grown. To navigate all the things he had to gothrough, MVP at 22, the injuries, and when I picked him up in Minnesota he
came in at the end of the season and as soon as he came an immediate impact on everyone who was there. Same thing in New York my first year there. We picked him up late in the season and I think we went 16-4 at the end of the season
and he was great in the playoffs. That’s just who he is. And to see how he is being received and appreciated by everyone says a lot about him. Could not
have happened to a better person and I’m glad it’s happening the way it is
here. I don’t know what’s next for him, but whatever it is he’ll be great
at it because that’s how he approaches things.”

One of the next will be his jersey retirement ceremony planned for next season.

“I’m still in a daze (about being told),” Rose admitted of his surprise
session with Bulls president Michael Reinsdorf that left Rose stunned and
emotional. “But it’s not about that (honored next to Jordan and Pippen). It
’s about me giving everybody that’s in this room, everybody that was a part
of the story, the journey, the good, the bad, the ugly, celebrating everyone.I understand coming from Chicago that it’s tough love. I had expectations on
me ever since I was younger; sixth grade everybody said I was going to the
league. Ever since then, to live up to those expectations and to not feel like they were a burden at the time, I felt like they were all challenges.”

the big bro and make sure that he’s looking out for his younger siblings. You’ve got to make sure they open the door for women. I’ve got to make sure he
walks on the right side of the sidewalk to protect a woman. All these things,grooming him to become not just a great person but a great citizen, too. That’s in every category. So when I did make the decision for me to stop playing, I didn’t care where I was. It was like, ‘It’s time, bro.’”

It was a heck of a time Chicago celebrated Saturday on Derrick Rose Night. But the memories and his impact will last a lifetime and like his great story
continues to evolve.
