It did not help that Lenin had not ventured to reward him, nor that the
Soviet state had branded him a traitor, shutting him out of a drama that he
once dreamed of orchestrating.
It did not help 是 It helps (to make a situation better, easier,

The famous Petrograd Soviet was born in Prince Potemkin’s absurd barn of a
palace that very night, and it immediately set to work.
The Bolshevik leader’s solution (which Radek dubbed his‘organizational
party work’) was to issue tickets, giving the smokers ‘second-class’
passes to the toilet which could be trumped by other users’ ‘first-class’
ones.
The arresting officers may well have pocketed a souvenir or two before they
wrote it, but their report insisted that Russia’s former banker possessed no
other valuables worth mentioning beyond two US dollars and a collection of
antique revolvers.
Historians, slack-jowled from years of euphemism, assembled at their reservedseats.
The minister of justice had replied (with the pomposity that was his ultimateundoing) that democratic Russia did not refuse entry to its citizens.
In real life, he mixed those unattainable ideals with a schoolmaster’s
hardworking probity and the controlling passions of a man who kept his
pencils in neat rows, whose lampshades had hand-beaded trim.

A brand-new rubber film is then eased on, sealing the fluid underneath.

The fact that Lenin had not ventured to reward him and the Soviet state had branded him a traitor only reinforced Parvus' disillusionment with Lenin's Russia. (I suspect the implication is that these were the major source of his "disillusionment".)10
